Vessel information

Location

Danubio Azul is located in the Galapagos Islands, a remote volcanic archipelago lying almost 1,000 kilometres from mainland Ecuador. Each eight-day diving itinerary begins and ends at Baltra Island before sailing through the islands and exploring several of the region’s most distinctive marine environments.

Itineraries reach as far north as Darwin and Wolf Islands, famous for their encounters with sharks, rays and other pelagic species, before turning back south towards Isabela and Fernandina. Here, colder nutrient-rich water supports a very different collection of wildlife, including marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins and mola mola. Stops around Santiago, Santa Cruz and North Seymour complete an itinerary that reveals just how varied Galapagos diving can be.

Liveaboard facilities

Danubio Azul is a 24.8m monohull vessel with the relaxed, sociable feel of a small expedition vessel. Built in 2007, introduced to the Galapagos Islands in 2016, and renovated in 2020, it offers practical comfort rather than elaborate luxury, keeping the focus firmly on diving and the remarkable environments explored along the way.

Between dives, guests can settle into the indoor lounge and dining room, enjoy the sea air from the open dining area or head to the sundeck as the vessel sails between islands. A small library offers additional space to unwind, while the onboard bar provides a natural gathering place at the end of the day. Four kayaks are also carried for use when the itinerary, local regulations and conditions allow.

Cabins

The vessel accommodates up to 16 guests in nine cabins on the upper, main and lower decks. Guests who prefer more natural light can choose the upper-deck doubles or singles, all of which feature windows, while the main-deck twins place guests close to the vessel’s communal areas.

The three lower-deck cabins have portholes and bunks, with a double berth below and a single berth above. Although the layouts differ, every cabin provides the same essential comforts, including air-conditioning, a private bathroom and hot and cold-water shower facilities. Cabins are serviced twice daily, allowing guests to return from each dive to a clean and comfortable space.

Dining

Meals are an important part of life onboard Danubio Azul, giving guests time to refuel and share the day’s encounters as the vessel moves between islands. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared onboard by the chef and served in either the indoor dining room or the open-air dining area, depending on the schedule and conditions.

Drinking water, tea and coffee are available throughout the cruise, while additional beverages can be purchased from the bar. Dietary requirements and allergies should be shared in advance so the team onboard can prepare appropriately.

Diving & itineraries

Diving onboard Danubio Azul

Danubio Azul was designed specifically for scuba diving, with a shaded preparation area, dedicated dive deck and two motorised pangas used to reach the sites. This allows guests to enter the water close to the site while the liveaboard remains safely positioned offshore. Air fills are provided from two compressors, with nitrox available at an additional cost, and the vessel also carries larger tanks and full rental equipment. Two guides are available onboard, with guest group sizes kep to 8 as a maximum , while emergency oxygen, first-aid equipment and marine communication systems are carried onboard.

The itinerary starts with Carrion Point and Cape Marshall before heading north to the celebrated sites of Darwin and Wolf. Multiple dives around El Arenal, Darwin’s Arch, Punta Shark Bay and El Derrumbe offer the possibility of schooling hammerheads, Galapagos sharks, silky sharks, rays and turtles, plus whale sharks during the season. The journey then continues through the colder western waters around Vicente Roca Point and Cape Douglas, where marine iguanas, penguins and mola mola bring an entirely different character to the diving, before finishing among the busy reefs and cleaning stations of the central islands.

Due to park regulations, the liveaboard cannot mix snorkeling and diving activities in a single itinerary, so while non-divers are welcome onboard, they will not be able to snorkel or follow the dive boats.

Diving in the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are located at the meeting point of several major ocean currents, creating nutrient-rich waters that support an extraordinary mixture of tropical, temperate and endemic marine life. Few destinations offer such variety within a single itinerary - divers may find themselves surrounded by schooling hammerheads one day and watching marine iguanas graze underwater the next.

Darwin and Wolf are the archipelago’s best-known liveaboard destinations, attracting divers with exposed reefs, strong currents and the possibility of remarkable encounters with hammerheads. Further west, Isabela and Fernandina are shaped by cooler upwellings and volcanic scenery, while the central islands add pinnacles, walls, reef fish, sea lions and smaller subjects.
